City tours of Chișinău

Last reviewed: May 2026

Free walking tours run on tips, paid private and small-group walks cost €25–€150 per person, and almost every operator can build a themed walk — Soviet, Jewish, architecture, street art — on request. Below is who runs what, what it costs, and how to book.

Free walking tours

Two host-led free tours run in English (2–2.5 hrs, both 5.0-rated). Tips are expected at the end (€10–€20 per person is normal). Two self-guided options round out the table for offline exploration.

Operator Schedule Booking Notable
Free Tour Chișinău Irina 2 hrs, on request, starts at the Stefan cel Mare monument Facebook, Instagram, email; Tripadvisor 5.0 (74+ reviews); ranked #6 of 87 tours in Chișinău Most-reviewed free tour in the city. Mid-tour coffee stop.
GuruWalk hosts Anastasia & others "Discover Chișinău: Past and Present in One Walk" — ends at the coffee museum guruwalk.com/chisinau — free booking, tip at end 5.0 ratings; multiple guides, more flexible scheduling.
GPSmyCity 6 self-guided walks, downloadable gpsmycity.com (Apple/Google Play) Best offline option for independents.
Civitatis self-guided Multiple themed routes, multiple languages civitatis.com / visitsights.com Free.
Vetting tip. One Tripadvisor reviewer reported being stood up by a different "free tour" guide who is not part of the three above. If you book by-request via Facebook, confirm the day before.

Themed tours

Soviet & Communist heritage

Almost every operator runs a "Back in the USSR" Transnistria day-tour (€60–€180; 7–9 hrs; lunch at the Soviet-style restaurant in Bender often paid separately, ~€10).

For an in-city Soviet walk, Elena Plescan's small-group tour is the standout. Hi Moldova DMC also handles the theme, and Kathmandu & Beyond's online guide is a strong free self-guided alternative. Top-rated Transnistria operators on Tripadvisor: Hi Moldova (Nicolai), Moldova Discovery Tours (Dmitri), BEST Moldova (Anna), Moldova Guided Tours (Marcel).

Jewish heritage

  • Centropa AudioWalk — free, multimedia self-guided tour at audiowalks.centropa.org/chisinau, developed with the Jewish Community of Moldova and Maghid – Jewish Heritage Moldova. Covers ghetto memorials, Glaziers' synagogue, former Tsirelson Yeshiva.
  • Jewish Travel Agency — full and multi-day private tours through Chișinău, Tighina, Soroca, Bălți, Orhei, with Cricova's 1902 "Jerusalem Easter" Pesach wine.
  • Moldova Private Jewish Heritage Tour on Viator (from $93/pp).
  • Top Tours Moldova / Oleg — well-reviewed for Jewish + Holocaust day trips that cross to Odessa.
  • ToursByLocals private guides — can build a customized Jewish heritage itinerary on demand.

Architecture (Bernardazzi era + Soviet)

The free GPSmyCity "Bernardazzi Architecture Walking Tour" (1 hr, 2.4 km) is a solid self-guided option. For a paid 2–3 hr architecture walk, ToursByLocals freelancers run them on demand for ~€60–€100.

Street art

Niche. Elena Plescan explicitly offers a street-art walk; otherwise it's typically folded into broader tours.

No hop-on/hop-off. Chișinău does not have a permanent dedicated tourist bus. The city promotes a Sightseeing Trolleybus (visit.chisinau.md), and most "bus tours" are private minivan tours run by Moldova Tours, Hi Moldova, or BEST Moldova.

Solo-traveler-friendly

  • Free walking tours. Best for meeting other travelers. Free Tour Chișinău and GuruWalk run with as few as 1–2 guests.
  • Small-group GetYourGuide. Capriana monasteries, Piața Centrală food, Castel Mimi half-day all run pay-per-person and join other travelers.
  • Hostel-arranged trips. Tapok Hostel, Retro Hostel, and Chișinău City Center hostels often coordinate group day trips.
  • Walk-in advice. The Tourist Information Center at Bd. Ștefan cel Mare 83 is free and English-friendly.

FAQ

Are the free walking tours actually free? +
Yes — the tour itself has no fixed price. Tips at the end are expected; €10–€20 per person is normal for a great guide.
Can I join a private tour as a solo traveler? +
Yes, but you'll pay the full per-group rate. Look at small-group GetYourGuide tours instead — those are pay-per-person and join other travelers.
Do guides need a license? +
Licensing is enforced primarily at national museums. Many "wild" guides operate without a formal license, which is fine for casual walks but blocks museum entry. Reputable DMCs (Hi Moldova, Moldova Tours, BEST Moldova, Ways) all use licensed guides — preferred if you're visiting the National History Museum, monasteries, or wineries that require it.
How long are typical city tours? +
Walking tours are 2–3 hours. Combined city + winery days run 6–10 hours. Themed tours can be 90 minutes (architecture) up to a full day (Transnistria).
